Derek stepped out of the corner drug store, the bell on the door signaling the leave of another customer. He pulled the pack of smokes from the plastic bag on his arm and took out a cigarette and lit it. He turned and started walking down the street, every few minutes blowing out wisps of smoke.
He'd been smoking more recently, he realized as he walked down the crowded sidewalk, then stopped at the pedestrian crossing. Well, a lot of things has been on his mind recently, more than usual. As the walk sign appeared, he started walking across the intersection. Derek wasn't paying much attention as usual, so he was surprised and somewhat annoyed when he bumped into someone, causing him to drop his cigarette.
He scowled down at the wasted smoke, then looked back at who he had bumped into. "Jeez, why don't you watch where-" He stopped, sensing something different about this person. he leaned closer and peered at their face, and circled around them, ignoring the blaring horns of the cars in the intersection, that they were still in the middle of. "Theres something odd about you..." he mused, as a curious smile played across his lips. "Whats your name?"

Samantha was just returning from her chat with Kaila. What an interesting person she was. I've met erasers who were kamikaze suicidal, but not suicidal suicidal... What a nice change of pace! she thought cheerily. She was preoccupied so much with the thought of something original that she accidentally bumped into someone, knocking a bag full of frozen meat to the ground.
"Oi! Watch where you're going, will ya?" she yelled as she bent to pick up the bag. She sighed in frustration as she picked up pieces that had spilled out of the sack with one arm. She look up to find that the guy was still there, and much to her irritation, getting decidedly in her face in what she supposed was an effort to figure out who she was. She told herself to walk on, but something kept her still as the guy circled her. Then he had the guts to ask for her name.
She snorted. "If that's a pickup line, it's a crappy one. If you want to talk..." She shoved an armful of groceries into his hands and finished picking up what was spilled. "...carry that, and follow me."
Directing Derek to the other side of the intersection, where Sam had been headed and Derek had just left. Once they hit the pavement, Sam set her groceries down on a bench, sat down, and gave him a very annoyed look.
"So, who are you to ask for my name?" she asked, not really in the mood for polite conversation.

Derek fumbled when the noisy girl shoved her grocery bag into his arms, but followed her to the side of the road he just came from. He plopped the bag down on the bench and crossed his arms in front of his chest, his mouth already in its annoyed line.
"First of all girl," He said, "why would I be hitting on you? And you're the one who bumped into me. Second, I should at least know the name of the ditz who isn't watching where she is going," he put his hand over his heart in a dramatic gesture "so that I can warn the good people and protect them from klutzes like you." He stopped joking, and pulled another cigarette from the pack, then returned it back to his pocket. Derek stared at the girl while he lit the smoke, noting her steel-colored eyes and dark brown hair. It looked like chocolate. Which reminded Derek, he was hungry.
"Now don't get the wrong idea again." He said, reaching into his other pocket for his wallet. "But you wanna get some eats? I'm starving."

Night was sitting in a small but kinda private cafe, or rather there was plenty of privacy. Nice atmosphere. Quiet, peaceful, etcetera.
She was just working on the computer. Working on well, work, the money money work, the work that is private and makes big bucks. $$$. So in other words, she was looking over an assignment from whoever was hiring her to get the dirt on someone or put whoever in dirt.
"Hmm, hanzatsu. Hontoni tsumaranai. Asoko nanika tanoshi suru desu na?" Night muttered out loud to herself, ending with a sigh. Leaning back a bit in her stool/chair, and going from looking at the ceiling she looked out at the street hoping something fun would come up...
{Translation Notes ^///^} hanzatsu ~ troublesome/how troublesome; annoying/how annoying Hontoni ~ really; very; etc. tsumaranai ~ boring Asoko ~ there (in the sentence meaning "Isn't there") nanika ~ something; anything tanoshi ~ fun; enjoyable; etc. suru ~ to do desu na ~ (a way to end a sentence. In this case to end a question.) {Full sentence translation} "Hmm, how troublesome. Really boring. Isn't there something fun to do?"

Derek opened his wallet and looked inside. "Crap." he muttered, he had forgotten. He spent his last few bucks on that last pack of cigarettes. He took the one he was smoking out of his mouth, and twisted it between his fingers, thinking.
He eyed the grocery bags on the bench, then looked back at the girl. "Looks like you got enough food for two, and since you made me waste one of my smokes and carry your food for you, I think a dinner would about even us up, don't you?" Derek said, starting to rummage through the large paper bags, he pulled out a pear and took a bite, "By the way," he said around a mouthful of fruit, "I still didn't get your name, Miss Bossy."

"Then you obviously haven't been in New York long en- OI!" she muttered, nostrils flaring, then changed tack as he started rummaging through her groceries. She made to smack the pear from his hand.
"I didn't buy this food for you! Damn straight there's enough for two, but you're not getting any!" she growled at him. "Food cost a lot more than cigarettes these days, as I think you well know! I'll buy us food at some fast food restaraunt, but that's it!"
She pointed a few doors down. "My apartment is over there. Wait here, and you'll get your food. I gotta put these in the pantry." Off she went, grumbling. Derek could hear snatches of "Damn Yankees", "something to remember" and "drop 'em from a roof" as she stormed off. She turned and disappeared into a door, and two minutes later she reappeared.
"I'll let you choose where we go. A little change from "Miss Bossy", eh, Jester?" she said.

Derek smirked, this girl had spunk. Spunk was fun to mess with. "Alright, Spunk." Derek said, pleased with a new nick name for Miss Bossy. "Lets go to..." He closed his eyes and spun in a circle, stopping to point at, "Er, well we can eat a wall," he mumbled, then moved his hand over. "Ah there, Burger King. So I can have it my way." He said, playing around with the restaurant's slogan.
He flipped the hood of his black jacket up to cover his feline ears, the front of his hair still sticking out the front. As he stepped in to B.K., he looked at the menu. Ugh, forgot... no fish here he thought sulkily. He turned back to the girl. "I'll take whatever and how much you can afford, Spunk." he said, a Cheshire grin widening across his face.

Sam snorted. "You couldn't finish off what I can afford. Choose what you want and you'll get it." She started to the counter, but paused. "And it's Samantha, by the way." Then she continued up to the counter, letting him mull over this new info, and placed her order. And a very large order it was, too. Fortunately, the guy at the cashier asked no questions.
She walked back to him and handed him a hundred dollar bill. "Buy," was all she said.

Derek was leaning back in his chair, making it balance on two of its legs. "Hmm, Samantha's a nice name, but I much prefer Spunk." he muttered, mostly to himself. When Spunk came back he took the hundred dollar bill, and purchased all he could with it.
He carried the tray, actually three of them, back to the table. He grinned at the cashier, who was looking quite annoyed at having to give all that food to just one person, who by his lean appearance probably wouldn't be able to finish it all.
Derek sat back down in his chair, pulling his legs up to sit Indian-style on it, and began to eat. He ate, and ate, and ate, until there was only one fry left. Which he left on purpose, because it was one of those nasty burnt kind that you'd have to scrape off the bottom. He started drinking his third refill, and looked back at Samantha. "So, you live in this here freak show town, Spunk?" he asked, leaning back in his chair again, the two legs it was balanced on making a small squeaking sound.

"You're the one with the cat ears, mate. And you tell me what's a freakshow and what's not?" She looked him over. "Black, black, and black. A Gothic cat. Do I want to know how that particular combo happened?"
She finished her food and sat back with a sigh. Immediately her stomach growled for more, but it was a muted one. She looked down and patted her stomach. "Watching my figure," she said with a scowl.
Her order had been almost twice as large as Derek's.
Sam returned to the conversation. "Almost five months. My brother and I go out of state every now and then for a job, but mostly we're stayin here," she looked out the window with an unspoken 'where they can't find us'. Sam looked back at him and surveyed him closely. "So, what about you? You got a name? Family?" she asked. There were bird kids and there were erasers, but she had never heard of a cat before. Which it was obvious this kid was. Sam wondered silently where he came from.

Derek's playful expression was replace with more of a serious one. Spunk wasn't as much fun now. "Hm, well, as for family I don't have a clue, seeing as how I came from the same place as you." He said, his keen senses being able to detect the slight smell of her feathers, and see the slight shape of wings beneath her clothes. "And I got a name, it's nothing much but its useful for stuff, like getting my attention or whatever. It's Derek."
Derek yawned, his mouth stretching wide, and the two teeth that were slight more pointed than the others sticking out. "Well, I live around here, in a way." he said, remembering the parking garage he had slept in the other night, and the condemned apartment building the night before. Derek leaned forward and grabbed another smoke from his back pocket, mentally reminding himself he better get some more cash before he ran out. He lit it, and took a long pull, then blew out the smoke. He watched it curl up, having a brief montage of the fire sprinklers going off, then turned to Spunk. "You want one?" he asked, holding the pack out to her. The thought of her being underage for them briefly crossed his mind, but didn't quite matter enough for him to pull back his hand.

Night got bored and tired... She sighed, closed her labtop, put it in her bag and headed out of the cafe, and onto her bike.
Helmet on, engine started, rived and off. Down the street she stopped at a light and noticed a boy and girl in a Buger King, kinda bickering, in an almost cute, girlfriend/boyfriend kinda way, but only almost. Night had a bit of a chuckle/scuff type of noise manage to escape her mouth. The light turned green and continued to drive off. Heading for a grocery store to get her shopping list taken care of and heading for her normal job, working at a dance club/bar... the Moonlight Rose.
At the grocery store she entered the well, enterance. "Ichi, aruko-ru." Night headed toward the 'adult beverage asile' and looked through the selection and compared it to her list. "Jack Daniels," grabbed the a couple of bottles, "check, sugi, etto, ichigo pucker, kyou, bara tequila... etto ah mitsukeru!"
After the alcohol, is the fruit and what-not, "Etto, iriyou, ah, lemons, sekkai, orangi, bananas, ichigo, pickles, shokora sugi, sohen."
After getting everthing on her list paid for it and left.
{Trans Notes} ichi ~ 1 aruko-ru ~ alcohol sugi ~ and; next (in both cases in this post it is 'and') etto ~ um ichigo ~ strawberry kyou ~ next bara ~ rose mitsukeru ~ found it; to find iriyou ~ need; demand; necessity ( 'i need' in the posts case) sekkai ~ lime orangi ~ orange shokora ~ chocolate sohen ~ chips {Sentnce Trans} "First, alcohol." "check, and, umm, strawberry pucker, next tequila rose... um ah found it!"
"Um, i need, ah, lemons, limes, oranges, bananas, strawberries, pickles, chocolate and chips."

Samantha grimaced. "Nope. Jack might like them more, but I've yet to see him light one. I couldn't say how he might- oh, hold on," Sam muttered as she reached into her pocket and pulled out a buzzing phone. She flipped it open, looked at the caller and sighed.
"Gods above, will he ever run out of boring work? I swear..." she pressed talk and held it up to her ear. "What? I'm talking here, I don't need you and your stupid... Yes, I always need money, if you've got something good. God knows you haven't the last few..." Sam waited for a few seconds, her irritation rapidly mounting. "Well, spit it out, man! Count yourself lucky I even listen to you!"
She listened, and then sat up in surprise. "Five...? Damn. That's... more than the usual amount," she said, somewhat subdued. "Who is it?" She listened for a heartbeat.
Then her eyes widened and she looked straight at Derek.
"Right... I'll call you back..." she flipped the phone shut and put it back in her pocket. Still looking at him, she crossed her arms, and leaned back in her seat. For the next minute, she did nothing but look at him intently. It was rather awkward.
"Well, congratulations," she finally said to him. "You're now officially worth my attention."

Derek tilted his head and put on his Cheshire grin again. "Oh really? And what makes me so interesting now, Spunk?" he asked, returning the pack of cigarettes back into his pocket. He couldn't quite hear what was going on on the other side of that phone call, but it must have been important. Sounded like a job. A high paying job. A feeling of unease began to make the hairs on the back of his neck stand up, but he kept his composure.

"What makes you so interesting, you ask?" She regarded him for another few seconds. "I'll tell you."
"Five million dollars makes you interesting, Derek."

"Oh really?" Derek said, leaning forward. The other two legs of his chair landed on the floor with a loud thump!, as he ignored the annoyed glances of the other patrons.
"Five million? Hmm, that could buy a lot of fish dinners..." he said, his mind already someplace else. "Well being this awesome does come with a price, I just figured it wouldn't be that much. And what exactly do you need to do to get that much cash?" he asked, the panicky, nervous feeling returning.

Sam's mouth quirked in a smile when he said the word awesome. Then she sighed, almost regretfully. Except that she was hungry in a different way inside. Her posture was tense, and she leaned forward.
"Let's just say I've never had a job end well for the target," she said.

Derek's mouth became a hard line, as he thought of his next move. He was older, and probably stronger than this chick. But he had forgotten most of his Eraser training from so long ago, and he hadn't used it in ages. Plus, she probably had a bajillion weapons who-knows-where on her right now, and he didn't have any. Well, there was a plastic knife in reach on the table, but that wouldn't help.
"Well Spunk, its been fun, and you're pretty interesting." Derek said, as he got up, his leg muscles tensing with the urge to run. "But I gotta go." He turned and ran out of the burger joint, and booked it down the street, disappearing into the first place he stopped.
As soon as he stepped in, his ears were assaulted with the loud music and thumping bass, his vision taking a while to adjust to the dim lighting and strobe lights of the club. He looked up and saw the name of the establishment in neon violet letters. "Moonlight Rose." Derek muttered, then melted into the crowd, his Cheshire grin back as he silently praised himself for giving Spunk the slip. Too bad though, he thought to himself, she was pretty cute.
